Bullshit Detection and Authenticity in Entrepreneurship
A lot of startup life is about selling ideas, developing your team, and building the foundation for your business. Those aspects are based on your clients, their ever-changing needs, and their pain points. Inevitably you need help: resources to grow, or tools to support you on your journey. But in the pursuit of success, you risk losing your authenticity by utilizing these resources. Detecting bullshit is valuable as an introspective and outward looking process. In this presentation, we will discuss the key strategies tied to being purposeful and authentic in how you engage with your clients.

Talking to Customers: Understanding What Customers Really Want
Customer discovery is a tool used in lean business planning to help businesses to figure out, as quickly as possible, the right thing to build, that customers want, and what they will pay for it. The process of customer discovery is simple, talk to customers about their problems, not your solution, to understand what they really want. Both existing businesses and start-ups can avoid risk through the proven process of customer discovery. In this workshop, we outline what customer discovery is, why you need to question your assumptions, how to test your ideas, and how to use information from customers to make better business decisions.

Capital Call, by Ben Franklin Technology Partners Central-Northern PA, gives entrepreneurs the opportunity to interact with investors and VCs.  Learn what investors value and look for in potential investment companies and get your questions answers live!

November 11th Capital Call with Mike Doyle, Goldin Ventures:

A “Family Office” is a private wealth management advisory firm that usually has a single client in that they serve an ultra-high-net-worth individual or family. Why do they matter in the capital ecosystem for startups? We are privileged to have Mike Doyle, from Goldin Ventures as out next guest on Ben Franklin Capital Call. Goldin Ventures is a family office, investing in early stage technology companies, on behalf of the Markowitz family, the founders of Allen Organ Company in the Lehigh Valley region of PA. The Integrative Path to Transformation
In my years in ministry, teaching, and coaching, I've witnessed the reality of which so many live their lives. Fragmented. We're conditioned, in many ways, to wear multiple hats as if we take on various personas over time while often sacrificing our truest self, our authentic self. More often than not it's a result of living our lives from the outside in rather than the inside out. The wisdom extracted from my own life, along with years teaching and coaching, has given me insight of how to turn that corner. To this day, the classroom is a laboratory to help students explore their own lives, in a deeper way, through the study of philosophy. In a time of so much fragmentation, in our lives, politics, and society in general, there needs to be a movement towards transformation and integration, to become whole.

Yes, and... Your Life to Move Forward Positively
With a combined 25 years of experience performing comedy improvisation and stand-up, and leading stress-reducing laughter yoga workshops, I understand firsthand the power when laughter and humor are harnessed. I propose an interactive presentation that builds upon the foundational principle of comedy improv: Yes, and...in which we practice accepting what is given to us and then determining what we can contribute to move forward. In comedy improv it is the basis for games and scenes built by actors working together but in professional settings and personal lives, it helps us work collaboratively--with a specific focus on listening, creative thinking and clear, effective communication--and enhance personal growth as we learn to keep from getting stuck and move forward, even when we don't like what life hands us. With the pandemic and its effects since early 2020, "Yes, and..." has never been a more vital philosophy to put into practice. The presentation will include some research and information on the health, wellness and professional benefits of humor, laughter, play and creativity and feature interactive improv games that rely on the "Yes, and..." principle. The games are fun but also reinforce listening to one another and responding in the moment, in a manner that is collaborative rather than combative or conflicting. I will also incorporate some laughter activities as an ice breaker and a closing to show people how laughter can be used to recharge and energize us while also helping us with overall well-being, stress relief and self-care.

PSU Biotech Boardroom Pitch Competition
Have you ever wondered what SDGs are?  If you have heard of them before how can you incorporate them in E-ship courses? The PSU Biotech Boardroom Pitch competition will show you how undergraduate and graduate students from different majors and colleges across the University came together as teams in the microbial biotechnology course: Biotc/Micrb 416 offered by the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department in the Eberly College of Science.

Students over the course of the semester started with identifying one or more of the 17 sustainability goals of the United Nations. They then applied their hard skills in the natural and physical sciences along with soft skills to find solutions. The proposed solutions were then presented in individual elevator pitches with the intent to form teams of people with similar ideas and solutions.

The next steps were the warm-up pitches named PSU Biotech Associate and PSU Biotech Supervisor before their final pitch: PSU Biotech Boardroom. Throughout the semester, after the team formation, students were accompanied by alumni mentors and judges from industry. Access to the PSU Biotech Boardroom Pitches will be available to people that RSVP by November 11th, 2021 at 5 pm. The official judging by alumni from industry will occur on November 12th between 2:30 and 3:20 pm. The judges will have the opportunity to ask each team questions and time permitting will announce 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners.

Entrepreneurs, E-Ship Course Instructors, STEM Educators, and anyone with an interest in SDGs, entrepreneurship, Stem education and/or just curiosity is welcome to attend!

Registration is required for this event. To attend this event, please email Suzanne Kijewski at sdk5252@psu.edu by November 11th, 2021 at 5:00 pm with your name, affiliation and preferred email.
